Count your blessings

One of the simplest ways to uplift our mood or changing our outlook is to remind ourselves of all the good things in our lives. Reflecting on what you have accomplished, what you have learned and all the opportunities in your life can be very encouraging.

As we go through this journey of life, we must keep our thoughts on our blessings, instead of wasting time and energy on the things in our lives that cause us nothing but heartaches. It’s never too late to change your life for the better but it all begins with a positive outlook.

Instead of worrying about everything that is wrong in your life, focus on what you are blessed with. Learn to appreciate what you have rather than focusing on what you lack.

Learn to appreciate the small things in your life, for one day you might look back and realise that those were the big things.

Counting our blessings make us happier. That’s what all the spiritual traditions tell us. And now even scientific research backs such claims.

There was a time when I was almost under depression, utterly unhappy with the way my life was heading. It was about the same time I turned to spirituality and started volunteering for social causes.

And that’s when I realised that no matter how well-placed a person might seem, they all are unhappy due to one reason or the other. Primarily because we all don’t realise that whatever our circumstances are, we still are way better than many around us.

When I went to a slum, spent some time with the people out there, saw the extreme conditions they were living in, then I realised how blessed I was to have a decent house. When I went to the orphanage for the first time, I felt grateful for the loving family I have. I had all the reasons to be happy, yet all I used to do was to focus on the problems in my life.

Once I started counting my blessings, I felt no lack, no discontentment and I am a much happier person than before.

Sometimes I thank God for the unanswered prayers, and the rest of the times I thank my friends and family for being there when the prayers were not being answered. I feel blessed to be on the path of spirituality and have met my master H.H. Sri Sri Ravishankar who has transformed my life in so many ways.

When I started counting my blessings, the list seemed endless and far outnumbered the problems in my life.
