Whenever there is a discussion about children’s books, the first names that pop into our minds are Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl or J. K. Rowling. We hardly think of any Indian author. But there were certain Indian authors who were a part of our growing up years. I remember my weekly visits to the market when my father would buy me a Tinkle or Amar Chitra Katha penned by Uncle Pai. In fact, the credit for my love for books goes to Amar Chitra Kathas. Then there were the delightful stories of Swami Narayan, the adorable fictional character created by R. K. Narayan. My English curriculum during school years would inevitable have a story from Ruskin Bond or R. K. Narayan.
I strongly believe that every parent should inculcate in their children a love for books. Blessed are the children who are introduced to the magic books since early years! And while you introduce your children to the delightful stories from around the world, don’t forget to give them an opportunity to learn about our culture & heritage by introducing them to some fabulous Indian authors. Here is a short video where I talk about five Indian authors whom you should introduce to your budding bookworms:
