Beat the blues

There are times when we feel too low and unhappy. Sometimes we feel blue for some reason but sometimes we become sad without any particular reason. Whatever it is but you need to get out of this unhappy state. Here are some simple ways to beat the blues and get back on track towards a happy and cheerful You:

  1. Write your thoughts in a diary or a journal.
  2. Call up your best friend and vent it out.
  3. Cook your favorite meal or go out to your favorite restaurant.
  4. Buy some fresh flowers for your home.
  5. Go for a walk in nature.
  6. Listen to your favorite music. Better listen to some peppy music.
  7. Read a book.
  8. Take an afternoon nap.
  9. Splurge on something you wanted to buy.
  10. Watch some funny videos on youtube.
  11. Sing.
  12. Go out and do something.
  13. Play with kids.
  14. Go to your neighbourhood park and strike a conversation with someone.
  15. Exercise.
  16. Meditate.
  17. Drink coffee or invite a friend over for a cup of coffee.
  18. Go through old photographs.
  19. Watch a movie.
  20. Write a letter to a friend.
  21. Write a gratitude list.
  22. Make your bucket list.
  23. Stop complaining.
  24. Do a random act of kindness.
  25. Volunteer.
  26. Play with your pet.
  27. Dance.
  28. Do laughter therapy.
  29. Dress up in your favorite clothes.
  30. Go for a new haircut.

There are endless things to do to get out of the blues. One thing may work for someone but the same thing may not work for you. It’s you who have to decide what makes you happy and brings you back to your usual self. It may be exercise for some but a quiet walk in the park for another. It may be a cup of coffee for some while a glass of wine for another.

The important thing is to be happy, no matter what. Life is too short to stay unhappy and sad. Don’t let circumstances or people affect you. Accept everything, every person, every situation and go with the flow. Whatever you do, just be happy and cheerful remembering that life is beautiful.

  1. Perspective is so important. Sometimes sadness comes for a good reason (illness or loss); it is important to remember, though, that life is short and precious. Gratitude helps me to move beyond sadness. Thanks for all the other ideas.

  2. I am sad about something, hence angry with someone. I want this hurt to go away. I want sadness to go. I am reading writing, spending time with niece. I forget in those moments. Then memories come rushing and I am sad

  3. Those are temporary fixes because when you wake up it’s back to reality. I’m not and never have been an accept and move on type person. For me that means that I have failed. Ones basic personality does not change. In fact you become more entrenched and set in your ways as you get older .

    1. Sometimes temporary fixes are needed to come out of unhappiness. However, I do not consider meditation or gratitude or acts of kindness as a temporary fix. They go a long way in bringing calmness and joy.

      1. Even as a child I was nervous. Anxiety and Panic attacks are just part of who I am. As is depression. Even numerous hospital visits don’t help. After nearly 60 years on the planet there’s nothing left for me to try.

        1. Oh…am sorry to hear that but you shouldn’t stop trying. Every moment of happiness is worth the try.

          1. True. I shall do my best. However I don’t complain nor do I take out my troubles on other people because that wouldn’t be fair to them. Even on my worst days I put a smile on my face for the benefit of my coworkers and customers. Nobody likes sad, grouchy moody people.

          2. Thanks. I’m using the Restorative powers of creating artwork, collages and paintings to add peace, calm and balance to my life. I also enjoy helping and feeding the neighborhood stray cats plus giving them ice water in this hot humid heat. I don’t like to see animals suffering. I appreciate and admire you for your support and encouragement. God bless!

      2. True. I have tried meditation but it didn’t work for. However I’m extremely high strung so no matter what I do it is temporary. I suppose that these attempts depend on your personality. I could perform good deeds and acts of kindness hourly but my sadness and depression would still be there.
However your suggestions might work for other people.

  4. we all have such moments. The list can be endless because each of us have their own choices. Thanks for inspiring us to be ourselves…back again!

    1. Yep, each one has their own way to come out of the blues. The important thing is to come out of it and be happy.

    1. I agree with you. ‘This shall also pass’ has been my mantra to sail through life’s difficult moments.
