Book Review: The Day I Stopped Drinking Milk

‘The day I stopped drinking milk’ is a collection of extraordinary stories from the lives of common people whom the author Sudha Murty came across during her philanthropic work. These interesting stories not only make for a fascinating read but also have valuable lessons to teach. It is a simple and gripping book with real stories and heart touching lessons.

As I progressed from one story to another, I came across lessons worth learning and experiences worth pondering upon. There is the story of Vishnu who inspite of achieving material success hasn’t learnt the art of being happy. Then there is Venkat who is so talkative that he has no time to listen to others and as a result, people avoid him. A poor, young girl meets the author during a train journey which changes her life forever. An impoverished woman in a village provides warm bathing water to a beggar which proves to be a life turning moment for her and now she provides bathing water to hundreds of needy people in a drought-stricken area. The title story is about a life lesson that the author learnt from a rural woman in a remote village of Odisha. Kashibai is yet another inspiring woman who is uneducated yet far learned in human values. A group of young people start a voluntary organization to help poor people cremate their dead ones.

The stories are written in quite a simple language and make for an easy read. Her simplicity and purity of thoughts will make you fall in love with her. It seems that the author is conversing with you or as if you are reading her personal diary. It gives a peep into human nature in all its forms. If you are looking for something light to read on a lazy afternoon then go for it. It won’t take up much of our time and you will actually enjoy it.
