Book Review: Murder on the Orient Express

Here’s my confession. I’d never read an Agatha Christie novel before.  But better late than never! This was my first Agatha Christie novel and it definitely made me look forward to reading other works by her. It’s amazing how she wove an intricate murder mystery which will keep you guessing till the end!

A train…a murder…twelve fatal stabs…multiple suspects, all with an alibi…and Hercule Poirot, the detective tasked with solving the crime, is certain that the murderer is a passenger on the Orient Express. Who is the killer? A mind boggling mystery which only Poirot can resolve! Well, I am glad he did because I was totally stumped trying to point out the killer. The ending was totally unexpected which of course, is a good thing when it comes to murder mysteries.

The plot is interesting and the setting unique. The characters are fascinating. It was so much fun meeting and learning about about them all. Considering the number of characters and rather short length of the book, it was surprising to see how well-developed the characters were. Hercule Poirot is simply amazing. There are no modern day electronics or techniques to research and test the theories. The only way to solve the mystery is by asking questions, observing and analyzing. The attention to detail is overwhelming. This is a perfect classic mystery. Agatha Christie is indeed a master story-teller who has the ability to keep the readers guessing the whole way through. The writing style was simple yet enjoyable which matched the genre perfectly.

I really enjoyed ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ and will recommend it to anyone who loves mysteries. This novel will certainly keep you on your toes. A very intriguing murder mystery with a classic touch and unique twist!

    1. I prefer to read the book first and so didn’t watch the movie till now. Now that you have given a favorable review, will watch it soon ?

  1. I remember watching this in a tv series. Of course, that can never match the book reading experience. Unfortunately, I haven’t read this book.

  2. This is my favorite Agatha Christie book. ☺️ I had reviewed her book ‘4.50 from Paddington’ on my blog once. You should check out ‘And then there were none’, it does not have any of Christie’s three famous detectives but it’s one hell of a story!

  3. Hercule Poirot and Jane Marple are two of my favorite Agatha Christie crime solvers.
Now that I’m retired I’ve downloaded a few Audio books for reading.

I started on the Interior Castle by Christian mystic nun St. Theresa of Avila. I’m not Catholic but I’m intrigued by the mystical side of early Christianity. Given the fact that I fell asleep while listening is not the fault of the book. I was just tired that evening.

I also downloaded Born Illegal by Trevor Noah and Game of thrones.

    1. Hahaha…I guess that’s the flip side of an audiobook. I have never tried an audiobook because I think I will not be able to concentrate. Which site do you use for downloading audiobooks?

      1. Audio books are part of Amazon. Free books are also available on YouTube. As I’ve gotten older my eyesight has gotten worse. Also I had an ocular occlusion in my left eye back in November 2008,which means I had a stroke in my left eye. I rarely read the newspapers or traditional books because I can’t read small type. When you become visually impaired everything changes. Traditional books are no longer in the realm of possibility for me. Aging and disease changes your life.
