Being a learner

Life is all about learning. There’s no end to learning. Apart from formal education, we learn more from our experiences. Every experience teaches us something new. Every mistake is a new lesson learnt.

The whole of life, from the moment we are born to the moment we die, is a process of learning. As kids, we used to be so eager to learn new things. But as we grow, our desire to learn starts fading. I blame this on our education system which restricts free learning. We cram our books, score good marks in exams, secure good jobs and we feel, there is no need of anymore learning.

We learn something everyday only if we pay attention. Each day learn something new. It may be a new skill, a new way of doing a task, a new habit, a new thought.

Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow. The more you know, the more you grow. It’s as simple as that.

But the common problem with learning is that we think of learning something new but rarely take a step in that direction. The most common excuse being lack of time or sometimes we feel what use this new skill would be for me. Well, you never know when the new skill comes handy. And as far as time is concerned, we always have enough time to indulge in vain pleasures then why can’t we find time for learning something valuable?

I had always been fascinated by tarot cards but never thought of learning it for the simple reason that it won’t be of any possible use for me. However I joined tarot classes four years back and I thoroughly  enjoyed learning a new skill. I developed an interest in astrology while taking tarot classes. I ended up doing courses in astrology, numerology, lal kitab and nadi astrology and now I am a professional astrologer and tarot reader.

You never know when you develop a passion for a new skill you learn and it might be a life transforming experience. When I joined an Art of Living course a few years back, all I had in mind was learning some stress busting techniques. What I didn’t know was that this was just the beginning of a lifelong passion and would lead me to my master H.H.Sri Sri Ravishankar.

No matter how accomplished we are but when we set out to learn a new skill, we have entered a new realm as excited, curious and enthusiastic as a child fumbling with his new toy. Being a learner keeps our life exciting and thrilling.

There are lot of things that I wish to learn – baking, playing a guitar, learning Spanish, dancing, making stuffed toys, painting, living a minimal lifestyle and so on. I don’t know if I would be able to learn all that I want to but one thing is for sure, I will keep learning in whatever capacity I can and that includes learning new concepts in whatever existing skills I know.

  1. I totally agree with you. Following what sparks your interest can lead to interesting discoveries and journeys of ourselves. I love your story of how studying tarot cards led you to more areas of interest. I too take comfort in being a student-mind always.

    1. Astrology is a vast and interesting subject indeed. It’s really fascinating to see how much insights you get on reading a horoscope.
