This too shall pass away!

“Once in Persia reigned a King,
Who upon his signet ring
Graved a maxim true and wise,
Which, if held before his eyes,
Gave him counsel at a glance,
Fit for every change and chance.
Solemn words, and these are they;
“Even this shall pass away.”

The above lines are from a beautiful poem by Theodre Tilton- ‘This too shall pass away’.  It is a deep poem with a sound advice. Time is ever changing. Situations and circumstances keep changing. It’s foolish to think that time will stay the same forever. Good times change and so do the bad times.

When we are going through good and flourishing times, we think that it’s going to last forever. And when we are faced with challenges, we get disheartened; we lose hope and become dejected. Only if we remember this simple yet profound advice –“This too shall pass away!”

Even the greatest of the Kings in this world have faced defeats. The most successful businessmen have faced losses at some point or the other. Edison failed 10,000 times before tasting success. Someone is enjoying all the riches at one moment and some natural calamity like a flood or an earthquake occurs and he loses everything. But life doesn’t stop at that. It’s just a small phase in life which too shall pass away.

Failures and success are two sides of the same coin. You can’t have just one. Ups and downs are a part of life. You have to take it in its stride and be ready to accept both. Life keeps changing and that’s the fun of it. How boring and dull life would be if there are no challenges! Good times or bad times- you be centered and calm knowing that these are temporary phases of life. They too shall pass away!

    1. Thank you! We know that nothing is permanent but still we need constant reminders to help us sail through tough times.
