Signs of Stress: Take action NOW

Stress had always been a major problem for me. I used to stress out even at the slightest cause. Like a typical Cancerian, I would hide beneath my shell and refuse to come out. Needless to say that along with stress, came its own set of problems. Moodiness, constant worrying, short temper, feeling overwhelmed, insomnia, binge eating and inability to relax became a second nature to me.

And the worst part was that I never saw it as a problem. I used to think it as natural. Thanks to all the websites citing stress as a personality trait of Cancer. However, my perception changed when I did my Art of Living Happiness Program.

This happens with so many people. Modern life is full of hassles, deadlines, frustrations, and demands. As a result, stress is so commonplace that it has become a way of life.

While a little stress keeps us focused and motivated, too much of it can grind our lives to a complete halt. When we’re constantly feeling overwhelmed and stressed-out, our mind and body pay the price.

There are many ways to tame stress and keep it at bay. Some exceedingly simple things if done on a regular basis can help to keep stress monsters away. Here are 15 tips to tame your stress today:

  1. Meditate. I have been meditating for quite some time and can honestly say, it has had an incredible impact in my life. Do pranayamas or deep breathing exercises for an instant calming effect.
  2. Exercise regularly or take up yoga.
  3. Make time for music, dance or other hobbies that help relax and distract you.
  4. Learn to manage your time more effectively.
  5. Make a list of the most important things (MITs) you need to handle each day. Be organized and on top of things by keeping a to-do list.
  6. Avoid using caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, junk food & binge eating to cope with stress. Eat well-balanced meals and keep healthful, energy-boosting snacks on hand.
  7. Get the right amount of sleep. For most people, this is seven to nine hours a night.
  8. Cultivate a sense of humour. A good laugh goes a long way.
  9. Set limits appropriately and say no to requests that would create excessive stress in your life.
  10. Learn to just say, “No” occasionally.
  11. Talk to your family and friends. See if they can help.
  12. Write in your journal. It can be very therapeutic.
  13. Play with a pet. It helps in breaking the monotony and bringing a smile on your face.
  14. Having a positive outlook really makes a difference. Each morning, think about three things you’re grateful for
  15. Volunteer or find another way to be active in your community, which gives you a break from everyday stress. Practice random acts of kindness.

If you feel that there are increasing signs of stress in your life, then these tips may inspire you to start relaxing and reducing your stress level. They certainly helped me a lot!

Remember — we do have control over the stress and choices we make in our lives. It just takes a little practice and effort!

  1. I wonder why “stress” is so underrated. So MANY health problems the modern man faces are because of stress. I am glad, you in your own way are making the world a better place by spreading the light! Kudos!

    1. My spiritual master’s mission is a stress free and violence free society. And this can happen only through spirituality and meditation. I am just a tiny instrument of his divine plan ?

  2. Very nice post! Those are all so helpful. Many people blame the world for their stress, without realizing that they can (and have to) take action to make small changes in their life that will make them feel better immediately!
